Portfolio vs Resume: What Is the Difference?

You almost always need both. A resume gets you shortlisted and a portfolio helps you convince someone once they are interested. They answer different questions, so one cannot really replace the other.

What a resume does

A resume is a short summary, usually one page for a fresher, that lets someone decide quickly whether to look further. Job portals and applicant tracking systems read it too, so plain text and standard headings matter more than looks.

It tells the reader what you have done. It does not have room to show it.

What a portfolio does

A portfolio shows the proof behind the claims. Where your resume says you built a dashboard, your portfolio shows the dashboard, explains the question it answered and links to it. It has no page limit, so each project can have its full story.

It also shows something about you that a resume format cannot: how you explain your work, and what you choose to put first.

The difference, side by side

Length: a resume is one or two pages, and a portfolio is as long as your best work needs. Format: a resume is a document you send, and a portfolio is usually a page you link to. Purpose: a resume summarises, and a portfolio demonstrates. Timing: a resume is usually read first, and a portfolio is opened by someone who is already interested.

Which matters more for your field?

In design, writing and media, a portfolio is often expected, and it can matter more than the resume. In software, it is common and useful, with GitHub links carrying much of the weight. In commerce, management, law and healthcare, the resume is still the main document, and a portfolio is a way to stand out.

How to use them together

Put your portfolio link on your resume, near your name and contact details. Keep the facts the same in both, because any mismatch looks careless. Then use the resume to make a promise and the portfolio to keep it.

Common questions

Can a portfolio replace a resume?

Rarely. Most application forms still ask for a resume, so keep both.

Should I attach my portfolio as a PDF?

A link is usually better. It is always up to date and it works on a phone, and it does not add to the size of your application.
